Your details and your wildlife list
The Pangolin Wildlife List is run by Pangolin Photo Safaris, the Pangolin Chobe Hotel, Kasane, Botswana. This is what the app keeps about you and why.
What we keep
- Your first and last name, country and email address, as you typed them.
- Your list: each bird and mammal, and when you ticked it.
- Only if you agree: where you were when you ticked each bird, from your device's GPS, to about the nearest few metres. Nothing is recorded until you say yes, and your device asks your permission as well.
- Your choices about locations and course emails, and when you registered.
We do not track you between sightings, and we do not keep your photos or anything else from your device.
No GPS for rhinos and pangolins. To protect them from poaching, no GPS position is ever recorded for White Rhino, Black Rhino or any of the four pangolins (Ground, Giant, White-bellied and Black-bellied), even if you share your location. They still go on your list, with the date and the place you chose.
Why
- So your list is backed up, and can be opened on your iPad, computer or another phone using your email address.
- So our guides can see which birds guests find, and when, to plan activities and share sightings with birding organisations. What we share leaves out names and email addresses.
- Only if you agreed to share locations: to give birding organisations sightings with their places, for maps of where Botswana's birds live. These leave out your name and email; each observer is just a number, with their country.
- Only if you ticked the box: to send you information on the free wildlife photography courses offered by Pangolin Photo Safaris and how to join the Pangolin Photo Club. You can unsubscribe from any of those emails.
- Only for a sighting you choose to send to BirdLife Botswana (the app offers when you tick one of the rare birds on its lists) or to Botswana Predator Conservation (when you tick African wild dogs): we pass them that sighting, with the number, place, date and your notes, and your name and email so they can follow up with you, as they ask.
Where it is kept
Your list is saved on your device, and a copy on Pangolin's server. If you asked about the courses, your name and email are also kept in our mailing list service. We do not sell your details or give them to anyone else, except a sighting you ask us to send to BirdLife Botswana or Botswana Predator Conservation.
Your choices
On My details you can change your details, stop recording locations, download your whole list, or delete your account, which removes your details and your list from your devices and from our server. You can also ask us at reception or by email to see or delete what we hold.
